Japan has a spirit of “Kotodama”.
Words has spirits, so it means that you have to cherish the words you use.
from
Poem whishing Godspeed to the Ambassador to China
It has been recounted
down through time
since the age of the gods :
that this land of Yamato
is a land of imperial deities’ stern majesty,
a land blessed with the spirit of words…
“a land blessed with the spirit of words”
The first document in which the word “kotodama” was used is the “Man’yoshu”, the oldest poem book in Japan.Even in modern Japan, there are words to avoid at formal ceremonies.”Kotodama” is a spirit of thoughtful consideration to others.
I’m singing this waka poem.
